Sixth Grade Summer Reading Assignment

All Saints Catholic School
6th Grade Literature
Summer Reading Assignment 2016-2017

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

During the first couple of weeks of school, we will focus on activities that relate to The Lightning Thief, so students should either wait until the last two weeks of summer to read the novel or plan to reread the story in the last two weeks of summer.  Whenever they choose to read the novel, students need to be sure the story is still fresh in their minds at the start of school.

Students must bring the completed assignment outlined below on the first day of school.

THE ASSIGNMENT: Graphic Timeline
(Graphic: of or relating to visual art, especially involving drawing, engraving, or lettering.)

Create a timeline which highlights critical events from the novel. You will not include all events in the story but will decide which are pivotal (most important and affecting the outcome of the story) and why each is significant. You should end up with about 7-10 events for the whole novel. Make a rough draft (list) before you start the actual time line. Choose symbols and colors that best represent your choices.  For example, “red’ for Percy’s anger, a trident for when Percy meets his father.  Pictures do not have to be of people; they can be objects or symbols representing the event.

Then choose one event that you feel is the most pivotal to the novel as a whole, and write a paragraph about this event. The paragraph should explain what makes the one event pivotal and should include one piece of quoted evidence from the novel. This should be placed on the back of the timeline. This may be tyed.

FORMAT GUIDELINES:
Draw your timeline on the front side only of an 8 ½ x 11’’ piece of unlined paper.

You may not use more than one piece of 8 ½ x 11” paper.

All timelines are not straight, although they always proceed in chronological order. You might choose to wind your timeline around the page, meander it across the page, go straight across, or up and down. You might group the events together. Put the events together in the way that makes best sense to you.  You can make a 3-D version.
Each event must be sketched by hand or on a computer.
Make your presentation visually appealing with the use of color.
The title of the book, the author’s name, and your name must be on the front. Be sure you indicate the book title appropriately.
Each event must have a descriptive label.
The written paragraph must appear on the back.
Neatness and creativity are important. You can do this well even if you do not consider yourself artistic.

BRING THIS COMPLETED ASSIGNMENT (OR TURN IN TO GOOGLE CLASSROOM) AND YOUR COPY OF THE LIGHTNING THIEF TO CLASS WITH YOU ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL.

Students who really enjoy this book might like to read other books in the Percy Jackson series: The Sea of Monsters, The Titan’s Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, and The Last Olympian.

I look forward to having you in my class next year!

Have a wonderful summer!
Mrs. Pain

About Me

I am so happy to be a part of All Saints Catholic School again! I was born and raised in Surrey, England and started my teaching career there. Interestingly, my high school was called St. Anne's College! My husband and I emigrated in 1981 and became United States citizens in 1994. Our two daughters both attended All Saints and Bishop Kelley, and I was active in the All Saints P.T.O and served on the school board during that time. I taught English Language Arts, mainly at the pre-AP level, at Sequoyah and Childers middle schools from 2001-2014. My first love has always been literature, so I am delighted to be sharing that love with your children this year!
